NAV 2018 Upgrade

NAV 2018 Upgrade

With NAV 2018 released on December 1, the next step for millions of NAV users shall be to consider an upgrade from their existing NAV version to the new NAV release. Whilst there shall be many others who will still opt for 2017 (their funda is to go for the ‘latest release -1’ to stay safe). Well, NAV 2018 is available for 22 countries in addition to W1.

The upgrade method for upgrading to NAV 2018 is not very different from the method used to upgrade to NAV 2017.

The upgrade method for upgrading to NAV 2018 is not very different from the method used to upgrade to NAV 2017.

Barring the upgrade from versions 3.x, 4.x, 5.x, NAV 2009 – where there is a need to perform ‘Form to Page’ and ‘Classic report to RDLC report’ transformation, I recommend using the ‘Powershell Merging’ for code upgrade. Its helps significant saving in merging time and is free of human mistakes. I have myself used it in more than 20 upgrade projects over the last year including various versions and have reaped benefits from it. Even for the versions 3.x, 4.x, 5.x, NAV 2009, all objects other than Forms and Reports can be merged using Powershell.

For the Data upgrade, using ‘Powershell cmdlets’ again reduces the data upgrade time and gives detailed information about any errors encountered during the data upgrade process.

NAV 2018 includes sample scripts where we need to provide the Source files as per the script demands and merging gets done on the execution of the script. Sample scripts are available in the ApplicationMergeUtilities folder under the WindowsPowerShellScripts folder on the Dynamics NAV product media. The sample scripts illustrate the creation of scripts to be run in the Microsoft Dynamics NAV Development Shell or the Windows PowerShell Integrated Scripting Environment (ISE).

NAV 2018 also includes sample scripts for Data upgrade. The sample scripts are located in the Upgrade folder under theWindowsPowerShellScripts folder on the Dynamics NAV product media. In the sample script, we need to include the database, license folder, upgraded NAV 2018 application objects and the upgrade toolkit objects.

The treatment of upgrading any add-on solution/s used in the older version remains the same as was followed in any earlier version upgrade. For NAV 2018 features read our latest blog.
