              From Copilots to Copilot Studio, Foundry, and Custom Agents: The Complete Microsoft AI Solutions & Services Portfolio in 2026

              Enterprise AI has moved into its operational phase. The conversations that dominated boardrooms through 2024 and 2025 are over. The focus in 2026 has shifted to harder problems. Enterprise leaders are working to embed AI into workflows their teams already run every day, get core business applications to act intelligently on their own data, build custom AI that reflects their processes and industry context, and govern and secure it all at enterprise scale. 

              Microsoft's AI portfolio is built to meet these priorities head-on. Over the past three years, the company has invested more than any other enterprise vendor in expanding its AI footprint, and the result is the broadest AI portfolio in the enterprise market. It spans daily productivity, pre-built agents for business functions, low-code and pro-code environments for custom AI, data and analytics assistance, developer productivity, and security operations. Every category sits on a shared foundation of foundation models, enterprise data grounding, identity, and governance. 

              The portfolio has grown broad, with each category serving a distinct purpose. Making sense of it starts with the full Microsoft AI solutions architecture — what each category covers, the enterprise use cases it supports, and where it fits in a modern AI strategy.

              Microsoft 365 Copilot: AI for Everyday Productivity 

              Microsoft 365 Copilot brings AI directly into the daily productivity apps that most enterprise employees already use. It works inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams to draft, summarize, analyze, and search across the content people work with every day. Copilot Cowork reached general availability in June 2026, after more than half of the Fortune 500 used it during the preceding Frontier preview. 

              Two recent additions make the category more capable. Copilot Cowork takes on longer multi-step tasks in the cloud so they keep running even when the user's device is off. Microsoft Scout, unveiled at Build 2026, is Microsoft’s first Autopilot agent — an always-on background agent with its own secure identity. It’s currently rolling out through Frontier preview to Windows and Mac users who hold both a Microsoft 365 Copilot and a GitHub Copilot license. Both are powered by Work IQ, which helps Copilot ground its output in each user's actual work. 

              Common enterprise use cases include: 

              • Employees use Copilot to draft proposals in Word, build financial models in Excel, and design presentation decks in PowerPoint. 
              • Teams use meeting-focused Copilot capabilities to generate transcriptions, extract action items, and prepare follow-ups after every Teams call. 
              • Knowledge workers use Copilot for email triage in Outlook, where it summarizes long inbox threads, drafts responses, and prioritizes what needs attention first. 
              • Analysts and researchers use Copilot with Work IQ to cross-reference internal documents, SharePoint sites, and Teams chats without switching between apps. 
              • Business users delegate multi-step tasks to Cowork, which assembles briefs, updates trackers, and coordinates work across mail, calendar, and files in the background. 
              • Executives rely on Scout to monitor their inbox for action items, run scheduled reports, and watch flagged Teams channels around the clock. 

              AI in Dynamics 365: Copilot and Agents for ERP & Customer Engagement Apps 

              Dynamics 365 is where AI acts directly on enterprise business data. Microsoft has shipped a growing library of pre-built AI agents across every major business function, and these agents run on Dataverse and operate on real business records, priced through a consumption model called Copilot Credits. 

              What separates Dynamics 365 agents from productivity Copilots is that they act on business records directly rather than just assisting humans who act. Because each agent shares the same data model, identity, and permission structure as human users, its actions flow through the same governance and audit trails that shape every other action inside the business. That model is what makes the pre-built agent portfolio in Dynamics 365 practical to deploy across departments at scale. 

              Common enterprise use cases by business function include: 

              • In sales, the Sales Qualification Agent researches inbound leads and prepares SDRs with call briefs, while the Sales Research Agent pulls detailed account intelligence before customer meetings. 
              • In customer service and contact centers, Customer Assist handles self-service across voice and chat channels, Customer Intent auto-discovers the reasons customers reach out, Customer Knowledge Management generates knowledge articles from resolved cases, Quality Assurance scores every interaction in real time, and Service Operations manages queue prioritization and overflow routing. 
              • In finance, the Finance Reconciliation Agent handles account reconciliation and the Supplier Communications Agent chases vendor invoices, PO confirmations, and delivery updates. 
              • In supply chain, Copilot in Demand Planning explains forecast changes cell by cell so planners can trace which signals shaped the forecast, and Traceability Copilot follows products through production for quality investigations and compliance work. 
              • In field service and project operations, Copilot summarizes work orders, drafts service reports, and surfaces variance explanations across live projects. 

              GitHub Copilot: AI for Software Development 

              GitHub Copilot has evolved well beyond code completion. Its current capabilities include multi-file editing, agent mode for autonomous coding tasks, AI-driven code review, and a full GitHub Copilot app that runs across the developer environment. GitHub Copilot is one of the most widely adopted AI tools in the enterprise developer stack with Microsoft reporting that 90% of the Fortune 100 now use it. 

              Common enterprise use cases include: 

              • Engineering teams use GitHub Copilot to refactor code across multiple files in a repository from a single natural-language instruction. 
              • Developers assign issues to agent mode, which then picks up the ticket, drafts the fix, and opens a pull request for human review. 
              • Code review agents flag bugs, security vulnerabilities, and style problems before code gets merged into the main branch. 
              • Teams use Copilot to generate unit tests and drafts of documentation, reducing the manual overhead that typically slows down shipping. 
              • Enterprises modernizing legacy systems use Copilot to port older codebases and explain unfamiliar code to newer engineers joining the team. 

              Microsoft Security Copilot: AI for Security Operations 

              Microsoft Security Copilot brings generative AI into the security operations center. Security analysts use it to investigate incidents, hunt for threats, and coordinate response across Microsoft Defender, Microsoft Entra, Microsoft Purview, and Microsoft Sentinel. The Microsoft Security Store extends the same conversational experience to third-party security tools and custom security agents. 

              Common enterprise use cases include: 

              • SOC analysts use Security Copilot to summarize complex alerts, trace attack paths across systems, and generate response steps in natural language. 
              • Threat hunters run proactive queries across Defender and Sentinel telemetry through conversational prompts, cutting hours off routine hunts. 
              • Vulnerability management teams use Copilot to prioritize Defender findings by risk and business context rather than triaging alerts in raw form. 
              • Identity teams investigate suspicious sign-ins and privilege escalation events through Entra data using Copilot to accelerate the investigation. 
              • Compliance teams generate Purview-based reports on data access, sensitivity labelling, and DLP incidents in a fraction of the time it took manually. 

              Copilot in Microsoft Fabric and Power Platform: AI for Data and Applications 

              Microsoft's AI capabilities also run across the data and low-code stack. Copilot in Microsoft Fabric helps data engineers build pipelines, notebooks, and semantic models using natural language. Fabric Data Agents allow business users to query governed lakehouse data conversationally, without writing SQL or DAX. Copilot in Power BI generates reports, explains what's happening in a visual, and answers questions against semantic models. Copilot also extends across Power Apps, Power Automate, and Power Pages to help business users build applications and automate workflows without deep technical skill. 

              Common enterprise use cases include: 

              • Business users query lakehouse data through Fabric Data Agents to get answers to operational questions without needing a data analyst in the loop. 
              • Data analysts use Copilot in Power BI to draft reports, generate DAX measures, and explain what a visual is showing to their stakeholders. 
              • Data engineers accelerate pipeline development, notebook generation, and semantic model creation inside Microsoft Fabric. 
              • Citizen developers build Power Apps forms and Power Automate flows through natural-language prompts, reducing the backlog on IT. 
              • Executives rely on Copilot-generated dashboard summaries to see what changed since the last period and what drove the change, cutting the time between report and decision. 

              Microsoft Copilot Studio: Low-Code AI Agent Development 

              Copilot Studio is Microsoft's low-code environment for building custom AI agents. Teams use it to extend Microsoft's first-party agents or build entirely new ones for workflows that Microsoft doesn't cover natively out of the box. 

              Copilot Studio has matured into a serious build environment. Teams can create agents that operate legacy interfaces without APIs, voice agents that hold real-time conversations, and workflows that hand specific reasoning steps to AI while keeping the rest deterministic. Everything built in Copilot Studio inherits the same identity and governance model as first-party Microsoft agents, which is what makes it viable for production deployment inside regulated environments. 

              Common enterprise use cases include: 

              • HR teams build agents that walk new hires through onboarding, handle benefits enrolment, and answer policy questions on demand. 
              • IT service desks deploy agents for password resets, access requests, and common troubleshooting scenarios that would otherwise flood the ticket queue. 
              • Marketing teams build agents that draft campaign briefs, generate first-pass content for review, and pull performance data from multiple channels into a single view. 
              • Sales teams create agents that qualify inbound leads against custom criteria, draft personalized outreach based on account context, and prepare deal-review summaries before pipeline meetings. 
              • Legal teams use agents to extract, classify, and validate key terms across contracts, cutting review cycles from days to hours. 
              • Finance and operations teams build approval workflows for capex requests, purchase requisitions, and expense escalations. 
              • Project managers build agents that track task status across tools, flag delays or dependency risks early, and generate weekly status reports automatically. 
              • Enterprises use computer-using agents to automate legacy interfaces that don't have APIs, extending the useful life of older systems. 

              Microsoft Foundry: The Platform for Custom AI Applications and Agents 

              Microsoft Foundry, formerly known as Azure AI Foundry, is where enterprise teams build custom AI applications and AI agents. It is Microsoft's flagship platform for developers and AI engineers who need to create something the pre-built Copilots don't cover. Microsoft reports that Foundry is now used by more than 80,000 enterprises worldwide, including 80% of Fortune 500 companies. 

              Foundry brings together everything needed to build production-ready AI. Its model catalog spans OpenAI’s GPT-5.6, Anthropic’s Claude Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku models, Microsoft's own MAI models, Mistral, Cohere, Fireworks AI, and a wide range of open-source options. It also includes Foundry Agent Service for production hosting, Foundry IQ for grounding AI agents in enterprise knowledge, Entra Agent ID for giving each agent its own secure identity, and the open-source Microsoft Agent Framework for orchestrating multi-agent systems. 

              Common enterprise use cases include: 

              • Enterprises use Foundry to build custom copilots and agents tailored to their own processes, terminology, and internal workflows. 
              • Teams orchestrate multi-agent systems where several agents coordinate on different steps of a single process, with handoffs, memory, and shared context managed by the platform. 
              • Developers use Foundry IQ to build custom retrieval applications grounded in proprietary enterprise data, replacing the homegrown RAG pipelines they previously had to build and maintain. 
              • Voice Live inside Foundry enables voice-based agents for internal helpdesks, customer-facing interactions, and other conversational scenarios. 
              • Frontier Tuning, lets teams post-train frontier and MAI models on their own workflows and enterprise data using reinforcement learning — going further than standard fine-tuning to capture how the business actually operates. 

              How Microsoft AI Solutions Work Together 

              Every category above sits on the same enterprise foundation, and that shared foundation is what makes the portfolio more than the sum of its parts. 

              Four elements run underneath every Microsoft AI solution: 

              • A single identity layer — Every AI agent gets its own identity through Microsoft Entra Agent ID, the same way every human user does. This means permissions, access rights, and audit trails work identically for agents and people, and IT teams manage both through the same controls. 
              • A shared knowledge layer — Foundry IQ and Work IQ ground AI agents in enterprise data — SharePoint, Fabric, Dataverse, files, chats — regardless of where the agent runs. An agent living inside Microsoft 365 Copilot draws on the same knowledge as one built in Foundry. 
              • A shared governance layer — Microsoft Purview applies the same data classification, sensitivity labels, and DLP policies across the entire AI estate. A rule set once applies everywhere, without needing to be reconfigured product by product. 
              • A shared security layer — Microsoft Defender extends threat protection to AI agents and their inputs, so the same monitoring that watches over user activity also watches over agent activity. 

              Because these layers are shared, capabilities compound across the portfolio. An AI agent built in Copilot Studio can be grounded through Foundry IQ, act on Dynamics 365 business records, and surface inside Microsoft 365 Copilot for the end user — all while inheriting the same identity, governance, and observability from the shared foundation. That is a genuinely different capability from any single Copilot running alone, and it is the practical reason enterprises are consolidating fragmented AI experimentation onto the Microsoft stack. 

              Microsoft AI Solutions: Industry-Specific Applications and Use Cases 

              The Microsoft AI portfolio applies broadly, but the highest-value use cases look different in each industry. Regulatory pressures, customer expectations, data structures, and operating models all shape where AI investment moves the needle. The examples below cover where enterprises in each sector are focusing their Microsoft AI deployments today. 

              • Banking and financial services — Enterprises use Microsoft AI solutions for fraud detection, KYC automation, wealth advisory copilots, regulatory reporting, and underwriting workflows that reduce risk and speed decisioning. 
              • Manufacturing — The portfolio powers predictive maintenance, shop-floor analytics, AI-driven demand forecasting, and quality inspection at scale, helping manufacturers close the gap between production data and real-time decisions. 
              • Retail and consumer goods — Brands use it for unified commerce, in-store clienteling at POS, merchandising copilots, and supplier communications automation, turning fragmented customer and inventory data into consistent experiences. 
              • Healthcare and life sciences — Providers apply it to clinical documentation, patient engagement, and prior authorization workflows that traditionally consume hours of clinical time, returning capacity to frontline care. 
              • Public sector — Agencies use Microsoft AI for case management, citizen services, compliance reporting, and multilingual constituent support, improving both response times and accessibility. 
              • Professional services — Firms rely on it for proposal drafting, engagement management through Project Operations, and knowledge management across client engagements, protecting margin and reducing time-to-value on delivery. 

              Where Enterprises Actually Get Value from Microsoft AI 

              The gap between adopting Microsoft AI and getting real value from it is wider than most enterprises expect. BCG's global research found that 60% of companies are seeing little to no material return on their AI investment, and its newly released McKinsey's State of AI report puts the share of organizations attributing any EBIT impact to AI at 37% — essentially flat since 2025 — with only 6% qualifying as true “AI high performers.” 

              The enterprises seeing real returns on Microsoft AI follow three deliberate practices. 

              Prioritize data readiness ahead of Copilot deployment 

              Data readiness is treated as a prerequisite, not an afterthought. Rolling out Microsoft 365 Copilot on ungoverned data produces a very different outcome than doing it after data classification, permission cleanup, and Purview labelling are in place. The AI is only as good as the data foundation underneath it. 

              Sequence the portfolio deliberately 

              Instead of deploying every Copilot at once, high-performing enterprises pick the category that addresses the highest-friction operational priority — customer service, finance close, supplier communications, developer productivity — and build outward from there as adoption and confidence grow.

              An AI agent built in Copilot Studio, grounded through Foundry IQ, acting on Dynamics 365 data, and surfaced inside Microsoft 365 Copilot creates a genuinely different capability than any single Copilot running alone.
